Think ancient medieval temples, majestic mountain ranges, prayer flags blowing in the gentle breeze and a calmness, inner peace and sense of serenity you’ll only ever have the chance to encounter in wonderous Nepal.  To experience just that, join us on this amazing volunteering program, set in tranquil monasteries in the ethereal city of Pokhara. Dubbed the tourism capital of Nepal, on the shore of Phewa Lake, and within the Annapurna Range of the Himalayas (featuring three of the ten highest peaks in the world), this program promises to leave its mark on all involved.

The aim of this program is for international students or professionals to dedicate some time to volunteer within the monastery to make a positive difference in the lives of the residents by means of love and education. It promotes global understanding, friendship and learning while offering opportunities to experience a true taste of monastery life and a glimpse of Buddhist ways of living. From Pooja ceremonies and rituals to simple daily monastery tasks, volunteers will live a truly authentic Buddhist experience. You’ll have the honour of helping educate those who dedicate their lives to peace, while making a truly meaningful difference to the lives of young Buddhist monks and nuns.

What to Expect

This essential volunteering program is ideally situated for adventurous travellers wanting to see the wonderous Himalayas and experience life in the birthplace of Buddha.  Living within the Monasteries, volunteers will experience daily life amongst the monks, dining alongside them and participating in various games and sports. Volunteers will teach the young monks English but also will help maintain the monastery with cleaning, cooking and with tasks such as gardening. These children and youth have a real desire to learn English from a native speaker and to learn more about the world outside.  They are eager to learn and appreciative of your time, wanting to soak up your experience and to understand the world in which you live.

With resources lacking, volunteers are encouraged to take worksheets and materials to aid in teaching. English skills are basic here, so beginner resources are appreciated. Volunteers will need to be flexible and understanding of the monk’s faith, as monastery schedules can change without warning to cater for cultural situations within the monastery. Volunteers may teach a few classes a day, or have time off to explore this beautiful place, taking in the many medieval era temples, lakes and gorgeous vistas.  As the adventure capital of Nepal, there are many fun things to see and do and other likeminded travellers to meet. This authentic program is guaranteed to be a volunteering and travel experience like no other. Join Meaningful Travel and help to make a true difference to the lives of others.
